The Cincinnati Bengals suffered a double setback during Sunday’s 22-17 home defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars, losing starting wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to injury. The losses leave Cincinnati critically depleted at the position as the team moves to a 2-2 record on the season.

Injuries to Chase and Higgins

Two-time All-Pro receiver Ja’Marr Chase left the game in the second quarter after being tackled by his facemask by Jaguars defender Jarrian Jones, drawing a penalty flag. Chase absorbed a secondary hit as he hit the ground at Paycor Stadium, remaining flat on his back before walking off to the locker room. Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed after the game that Chase sustained a concussion, meaning he must clear the league’s health protocols before returning to play.

With Chase ruled out for the second half, the Bengals depended heavily on Tee Higgins, who accumulated 11 receptions for 157 yards. However, Higgins sustained an adductor injury following a sideline catch on Cincinnati’s final possession. Taylor noted that Higgins attempted to remain on the field despite the pain. “He just couldn’t do it,” Taylor said.

Strained Receiving Depth

The latest injuries leave the Bengals missing four of the wide receivers named to their initial 53-player roster. Andrei Iosivas is currently on injured reserve after undergoing thumb surgery, while Colbie Young remains sidelined with an unspecified knee injury suffered the previous week.

To fill the gaps, Cincinnati relied on Mitchell Tinsley, who rejoined the squad from Houston’s practice squad earlier in the week, and former Canadian Football League player Dohnte Meyers. Tinsley recorded three catches for 49 yards, while Meyers caught seven passes for 82 yards.

Quarterback Joe Burrow completed 39 of 54 passes for 428 yards, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions. Burrow expressed trust in the backup options, stating, “We called it just like we would have if anybody else was in there.”

Late Comeback Falls Short

Despite missing their key offensive targets, the Bengals mounted a drive in the closing minutes, trailing by five points. The rally ended 12 yards short of the end zone when Burrow turned the ball over on downs, citing a miscommunication with tight end Mike Gesicki on an incomplete fourth-down pass.

The defeat leaves Cincinnati at .500 through four games for the second consecutive year. The team next travels to face the Miami Dolphins.

Background

Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins form one of the most productive receiving duos in the NFL, serving as the core of quarterback Joe Burrow’s passing attack. Players diagnosed with a concussion must complete a standardized five-phase medical process before receiving clearance from an independent neurological consultant to play again.
