Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers: History, Championships, Players and Latest Team Information
The Los Angeles Chargers are one of the NFL’s most recognizable franchises, with a history that began in the American Football League in 1960. The team currently competes in the AFC West, alongside the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders. After spending most of its history in San Diego, the franchise returned to Los Angeles in 2017 and now plays its home games at SoFi Stadium.
Los Angeles Chargers History
The Chargers were founded in 1959 and played their first season in 1960 as a charter member of the AFL. The team moved to San Diego after its inaugural season, where it developed into one of the AFL’s most exciting teams under head coach Sid Gillman.
San Diego won five division titles during the AFL’s first six seasons and captured its first major championship in 1963. The Chargers defeated the Boston Patriots 51-10 to win the AFL championship, with an innovative passing attack helping establish the franchise as an offensive powerhouse.
The Chargers enjoyed another strong era during the late 1970s and early 1980s under coach Don Coryell. Quarterback Dan Fouts directed the famous “Air Coryell” offense, with Hall of Fame receivers Charlie Joiner and tight end Kellen Winslow among his key targets. San Diego won AFC West titles in 1979, 1980 and 1981 and became one of the league’s most entertaining teams.
The franchise reached its first Super Bowl following the 1994 season. San Diego defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX.
In 2016, the Chargers announced their return to Los Angeles. The team began playing at SoFi Stadium in 2020, sharing the venue with the Los Angeles Rams.
Chargers Legends and All-Time Greats
The Chargers have produced a long list of NFL stars. Lance Alworth, Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Kellen Winslow, Junior Seau and LaDainian Tomlinson are among the franchise’s most celebrated players.
Tomlinson remains the Chargers’ career rushing leader with 12,490 yards, while Philip Rivers holds the franchise record for passing yards with 59,271. Keenan Allen is the team’s all-time leader in receptions with 985.
Modern stars have added to that legacy, particularly quarterback Justin Herbert, who has established himself as one of the NFL’s premier young quarterbacks.
Los Angeles Chargers Today
The Chargers enter the 2026 NFL season under head coach Jim Harbaugh, with Justin Herbert continuing to lead the offense. The team is aiming to build on its recent progress and compete for the AFC West title.
The 2026 offseason also brought an important offensive change, with Mike McDaniel joining the Chargers as offensive coordinator. His arrival adds another layer to an offense built around Herbert’s passing ability.
The Chargers have faced some significant offensive-line concerns during preseason. Center Tyler Biadasz suffered a serious left knee injury during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers and was subsequently placed on season-ending injured reserve. Rookie Jake Slaughter has stepped into the center competition following the injury.
There was also encouraging news when left tackle Rashawn Slater returned to practice and participated in 11-on-11 work. His return could provide an important boost to an offensive line that has dealt with injuries.
Herbert is expected to receive playing time in the Chargers’ final preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, while defensive stars Khalil Mack and Derwin James Jr. are not expected to play. The game is an important final preparation opportunity before the regular season begins.
