Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed that offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel will remain in his position despite the team falling to an 0-4 record this season. Harbaugh defended McDaniel following a 30-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
The defeat extended Los Angeles’ winless streak, which dates back to Week 16 of the previous season. Despite persistent offensive difficulties, Harbaugh publicly backed his coordinator after the game.
Early Turnover Troubles
“His job is not in jeopardy,” Harbaugh said when asked about McDaniel’s status. “He’s a skilled coach, and we’re going to keep growing.”
The matchup in Seattle opened with immediate setbacks for the Chargers. On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Justin Herbert threw an interception to Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas. In the second quarter, Herbert suffered another turnover when linebacker Ernest Jones IV intercepted a pass intended for either wide receiver Ladd McConkey or tight end Oronde Gadsden.
Harbaugh explained that Herbert anticipated the linebacker shifting inside before the defender made a play back toward the outside. Herbert completed 5 of 14 passes for 36 yards and two interceptions in the opening half, marking his lowest single-half passing yardage total of the season as Los Angeles went into halftime trailing 20-6.
Second-Half Comeback Attempt
Los Angeles responded after the break, recording a season-high 23 points. The Chargers reduced the deficit to seven points and held an opportunity to equalize with 1:42 remaining in the fourth quarter.
During the late scoring drive, Herbert converted a fourth down with a 44-yard pass to wide receiver Quentin Johnston over defender Nehemiah Pritchett. Three plays later, Herbert connected with wide receiver Tre’ Harris on a 21-yard third-down pass over cornerback Josh Jobe while absorbing a hit from safety Nick Emmanwori.
“Just settled down,” Herbert said regarding the team’s improved offensive performance in the second half.
