Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse has detailed how the team plans to integrate newly signed veteran LeBron James into its offensive system, framing him as a primary playmaker as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Speaking after the third day of training camp in Camden, New Jersey, Nurse outlined an offensive framework designed around James’ passing abilities alongside a lineup of established scorers.

The coaching staff introduced offensive schemes during five-on-zero drills on Thursday following two initial days dedicated strictly to defensive organization. According to unnamed team sources cited by ESPN, team officials held offseason discussions regarding playing James as a point forward. Nurse confirmed that while the ball will frequently be in James’ hands, several players will share ball-handling responsibilities to keep the offense moving.

Transition and Playmaking Duties

Nurse emphasized a fast-paced system where multiple players are authorized to secure rebounds and immediately push play up the floor. Alongside James, starting guard Tyrese Maxey, wing Jaylen Brown, and rookie VJ Edgecombe have been tasked with driving fast-break opportunities directly off defensive stops.

When play transitions into half-court sets, Nurse expects James—who holds the NBA record for all-time points and ranks fourth in all-time assists—to direct the team’s actions. Nurse noted that he views James as a “great offense creator” and a “table setter” who can initiate plays either by bringing the ball up court or receiving passes on the wing to create scoring opportunities for teammates.

Balancing Space on the Floor

Integrating multiple primary offensive options presents spacing challenges, particularly near the basket. James, Brown, and center Joel Embiid all operate effectively out of the post, requiring clear floor positioning to prevent congestion near the lane.

Brown revealed that he has spent post-practice sessions working with player development coaches on passing out of double teams to locate open perimeter shooters. Commenting on pairing with Embiid, Brown stated that playing alongside a center capable of shooting from distance “really complements my game well.”

Nurse added that he is actively encouraging tactical feedback from senior players, confirming he held discussions with James and four other squad members prior to Thursday’s practice to foster a collaborative environment.

Looking Ahead to Preseason

The 76ers have limited practice sessions remaining before testing their new tactical structure in game conditions. Philadelphia begins its preseason schedule on Monday with a home matchup against the New York Knicks.

Background

The Philadelphia 76ers entered training camp with significant roster changes, adding veteran forward LeBron James to a core featuring guard Tyrese Maxey and center Joel Embiid. Head coach Nick Nurse, entering his second season with Philadelphia, spent the opening days of camp establishing defensive priorities before introducing tactical plays. The franchise is aiming to build team cohesion across a roster that mixes established All-Stars with young talent ahead of the regular season.
