Pegula Defeats Swiatek to Set Up First All-American Cincinnati Women’s Final in 56 Years

American tennis player Jessica Pegula has secured her place in the women’s singles final at the Cincinnati Open following a victory over six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek of Poland. Pegula, who enters the tournament as the third seed, won the semi-final match with a scoreline of 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Pegula’s victory sets up a championship match against fellow American player Coco Gauff on Sunday. She observed that “it was really tough to get a gauge on the match” because both players experienced alternating periods of high-level and inconsistent play. Pegula explained that she managed the match by constantly reminding herself not to become overly frustrated by the repeated breaks back and forth.

In the men’s tournament, Frances Tiafoe advanced to the final by defeating fellow American Brandon Nakashima 7-5, 6-3 in his semi-final contest. Tiafoe will face France’s Arthur Fils in the championship final. The upcoming match between Tiafoe and Fils will represent a significant milestone in men’s tennis, as it will be the first ATP Masters 1000 final in history to feature two Black players.

Tiafoe previously reached the Cincinnati Open final in 2024, where he was defeated by Jannik Sinner. Speaking about the significance of competing against Fils in the final, Tiafoe noted that “it’s always nice to be a part of history” and expressed hope that seeing players of colour in major finals would inspire young people looking up to them. In the history of ATP Masters 1000 events, only two Black men have won singles titles: Ben Shelton of the United States and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.
