University of Pittsburgh starting quarterback Mason Heintschel will miss the rest of the college football season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The sophomore suffered the knee injury during the third quarter of his team’s victory over Virginia Tech on Friday night. The injury removes one of the top statistical passers in American college football from the undefeated Panthers roster.

Injury details and game context

Heintschel was injured along the sideline after taking a hit from Virginia Tech cornerback Cam Chadwick. He struggled to place weight on his right leg before being taken to the locker room for evaluation, later returning to the Pittsburgh bench using crutches.

At the time of his departure in the third quarter, Pittsburgh trailed Virginia Tech 24-21. Fifth-year backup quarterback Holden Geriner entered the game in relief, completing eight of 12 passes for 78 yards and one touchdown to secure a 35-33 comeback victory. The win advanced Pittsburgh to a 5-0 record on the season.

Heintschel’s breakout season

Before the injury, Heintschel was experiencing a productive second season in offensive coordinator Kade Bell’s system. He entered the weekend tied for the Atlantic Coast Conference lead in passing touchdowns with 14, alongside a single interception. He averaged 260.8 passing yards per game and held a 66.2 percent completion rate through five games.

An unheralded recruit from Toledo, Ohio, Heintschel assumed the starting role during his freshman season in 2025 after replacing Eli Holstein. Across 15 career college games, Heintschel compiled an 11-3 record as a starter, totaling 3,658 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes with a 64.4 percent completion rate.

Team reaction and depth chart changes

Head coach Pat Narduzzi addressed the loss in a statement on Saturday, saying, “We’re heartbroken for Mason, but he’s a resilient young man.” Narduzzi added that Heintschel will remain active with the team to assist in coaching the remaining quarterbacks.

Geriner will step in as the permanent starting quarterback moving forward. A fifth-year player, Geriner spent three seasons at Auburn before playing at Texas State in 2025. His upcoming start against North Carolina will mark the first starting assignment of his college career.

Background

College football in the United States is governed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Top university teams compete in primary athletic conferences, including the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), aiming for selection to postseason bowl games and national playoff tournaments. Players are granted limited years of eligibility, making mid-season injuries particularly impactful for underlying roster development and team rankings.
