The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the New York Yankees 1-0 in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday behind an eight-inning, one-hit performance from starter Drew Rasmussen. A solo home run by Tampa Bay infielder Jonathan Aranda provided the sole run of the contest. The victory gives Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five playoff series.

Rasmussen’s Dominant Outing

Rasmussen carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, allowing only two walks through the first three frames before adjusting his approach. Following a conversation with catcher Liam Hicks early in the game, the 31-year-old right-hander retired 15 consecutive New York batters. Rasmussen recorded 10 strikeouts, setting a franchise postseason record, and generated 23 swing-and-misses across 101 pitches.

Tampa Bay significantly altered Rasmussen’s pitch selection for the matchup. Rasmussen threw his changeup on 27 percent of his pitches, compared to a 13 percent usage rate during the regular season. Four of his 10 strikeouts came via the changeup. “I don’t think I called a single pitch of my own,” Rasmussen said after the game, crediting Hicks with guiding the pitch selection. Hicks noted the mid-game shift, saying, “He did make that adjustment as the game went on.” Rays pitcher Nick Martinez added, “He’s the guy we rely on.”

Yankees Strategy and Baserunning Error

New York manager Aaron Boone fielded eight left-handed hitters in his starting lineup to counter the right-handed Rasmussen, matching an MLB postseason record previously set by the Yankees during the wild-card round. The lineup move yielded little results against Rasmussen, who entered the contest holding a career 1.81 ERA in 11 appearances against New York.

The Yankees finally broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the eighth inning when catcher Austin Wells hit a line drive down the right-field line. However, Wells was thrown out at third base attempting to stretch the hit into a triple, ending the inning. “Just obviously not a good decision there,” Boone said regarding the baserunning mistake. New York played the game without outfielder Aaron Judge, who was omitted from the team’s ALDS roster.

Deciding Home Run and Postseason Context

Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole allowed one run over five innings in his first playoff start since the 2024 World Series. The decisive moment came when Aranda hit a changeup on the outer edge of the plate over the right-field wall for a solo home run. After Rasmussen completed eight scoreless innings, Rays manager Kevin Cash brought in All-Star closer Bryan Baker to finish the game.

The matchup was the first playoff game played at Tropicana Field since Hurricane Milton damaged the stadium’s roof two years ago. Due to repairs, Tampa Bay was forced to play its 2025 home games at the Yankees’ spring training facility across the bay in Tampa.

Background

The Rays and Yankees are division rivals in the American League East. Rasmussen has historically performed well against New York, holding a 1.81 ERA across 11 career outings against the franchise prior to Saturday’s start, the lowest mark by any pitcher against New York over the last 100 seasons. In his final regular-season start on Sept. 22, Rasmussen pitched 6 and 2/3 innings of one-hit ball during a doubleheader victory at Yankee Stadium that secured the division title for Tampa Bay. Saturday’s sellout game also marked Tropicana Field’s return to hosting postseason baseball following a two-year recovery from hurricane damage.
