TCU American Football Player Hospitalized with Brain Bleed After Alleged Locker Room Assault

A Texas Christian University American football player was hospitalized for three days, including a stint in intensive care, following an alleged assault by a teammate inside the team’s athletic facility, according to police records obtained by local media.

Dozie Ezukanma, a junior wide receiver at the university located in Texas, suffered a brain bleed, a concussion, and other injuries after an incident on Aug. 13 in the university’s Walsh Athletic Complex. An arrest warrant affidavit obtained by Dallas television station WFAA states that Jacob Fields, a former teammate who has since been dismissed from the squad, punched and kicked Ezukanma in the head during the encounter.

According to the affidavit, Ezukanma told campus police officers that he was looking at his mobile phone when the alleged assault occurred and lost consciousness. He recalled waking up in the team’s training room, where fellow players informed him about what had taken place. A witness told an athletic trainer, “Dozie wasn’t paying attention. [Fields] just hit him.” The witness added that Fields continued to kick Ezukanma after he fell to the floor.

Ezukanma told investigators he believed Fields attacked him due to frustration over positional competition during pre-season training camp. Ezukanma noted that he had outperformed Fields in practice the day prior to the incident, on Aug. 12. The affidavit noted that Ezukanma provided police with a text message sent by Fields, who wrote that he “made an emotional decision cause how I felt played the last few practices” and offered to cover Ezukanma’s medical expenses.

Medical staff examined Ezukanma after he reported experiencing severe headaches and ringing in his ears. Hospital CT scans confirmed internal brain bleeding, resulting in his placement in intensive care. A third scan conducted later that evening indicated his condition had stabilized, and he was released from the hospital on Aug. 16.

Fields, a 21-year-old player who previously transferred from Louisiana Tech, surrendered to authorities on Sunday. He was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and was released after posting a $50,000 bond, according to details provided by his agent.

Addressing the matter publicly following TCU’s season-opening game in Ireland, head coach Sonny Dykes described the violence as “certainly out of character” for the team. Dykes told reporters, “Look, you got 110 football players. I mean, things happen sometimes.” Ezukanma did not travel with the team to Ireland for the match.
