Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton made his return to the court on Wednesday, playing 16 minutes in a 123-112 preseason victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The exhibition marked Haliburton’s first game appearance in over 16 months following a major tendon injury sustained during the 2025 postseason.
Limited Minutes in Preseason Opener
Playing at Hilton Coliseum on the campus of Iowa State University, Haliburton scored seven points on 3-of-8 shooting, alongside six assists, one steal, and two blocks. All 16 of his minutes were played during the first half as the Pacers restricted his playing time in his first action since tearing his right Achilles tendon more than 400 days ago.
Addressing reporters after the game, Haliburton noted that pace was an issue early on. “There was just a lot of adrenaline,” Haliburton said. He added that while his body moved faster than expected, his ability to read the game remained intact, comparing the experience to feeling like a rookie while adjusting back to game conditions.
Campus Venue and Student Support
The game held personal significance for Haliburton, who played college basketball for Iowa State from 2018 to 2020. To recreate a college environment, Haliburton purchased the student sections at both ends of the arena to provide free access to students. Attendees began lining up outside the venue as early as 11 p.m. the previous evening.
During the fourth quarter, spectators chanted for Haliburton to re-enter the game. Haliburton, resting on the bench in sandals, pointed to his footwear to signal that his night was complete. When fans continued chanting for him to put his shoes back on, he declined, citing strict adherence to his recovery regimen.
Background
Haliburton was injured during Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals when he suffered a torn right Achilles tendon. The preseason game at Iowa State was originally scheduled for 2025 but was postponed by one year to match his rehabilitation schedule.
