High installation costs, maintenance complications, and energy efficiency issues continue to prevent solar roof tiles from achieving widespread adoption, despite offering a visual alternative to traditional solar panels. The sector faced a major shift in August when Tesla removed solar roofs from its website following weak sales performance and legal disputes regarding price increases.

High Costs and Complex Installations

Unlike standard photovoltaic panels mounted on top of existing roofs, solar tiles integrate directly into the roofing system. Before accounting for future maintenance, installing a solar roof can cost twice as much as putting up standard mounted panels. Manufacturing challenges contribute to these expenses, as components are produced in smaller batches, restricting the cost benefits of large-scale standardized production.

Individual property requirements further increase financial barriers. Deborah Learoyd, chief executive of Swiss manufacturer Freesuns, noted that custom engineering and fitting are necessary because every roof differs slightly. Freesuns, which is weighing an expansion into the US market, estimates that its sales have increased by 20% to 30% since the business was founded in 2019.

Installation workflows also create operational friction. Projects require coordination among roofers, solar contractors, and electricians, alongside navigating stricter building codes. Kate Collardson, operations manager at Solar Service of Colorado, stated that extended timelines and administrative duties can discourage roofing contractors from taking on solar tile jobs.

Technical Efficiency and Maintenance Challenges

Solar roof tiles generate less power than conventional panels due to design and physical constraints. Because tiles sit directly against the roof structure, limited airflow leads to heat accumulation, which degrades solar cell performance. Furthermore, individual tiles are smaller, and non-black decorative shades absorb less light. Ben Graves, co-founder of UK solar firm Sunsave, noted that most consumers prioritize energy cost savings over visual appearance, making expensive tile systems less appealing.

Maintenance presents additional technical obstacles. Standard panels include underlying diagnostic electronics that allow technicians to pinpoint failing components. Solar tiles lack space for these monitors, requiring thermal cameras to locate faults. Repairing individual tiles is also difficult, as walking across neighboring shingles to reach broken units risks creating micro-fractures in surrounding materials.

Technological Innovations Offer Potential Growth

Despite industry exits by major companies, some experts and manufacturers see opportunities for market growth. Martin Heinrich, a research group leader at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Germany, argued that integrated solar tiles should be viewed as generating energy from roof surfaces that would otherwise remain inactive, rather than as a direct replacement for panel arrays.

Emerging manufacturing techniques may improve tile viability. Matrix shingling technology cuts solar cells into narrow strips connected by conductive adhesive rather than silver wiring. This setup allows electrical currents to bypass shaded areas or debris on individual cells while improving aesthetic appeal. Supporters believe flexible manufacturing processes and automated design software could help reduce production costs over time.

Background

Solar tiles, also known as solar shingles, integrate solar cells directly into roofing materials to mimic traditional building appearances. While conventional panels remain the dominant form of residential solar generation due to lower costs and easier maintenance, solar roofs are frequently sought for historic structures or properties subject to strict heritage rules.
