Wrexham suffered a 6-0 defeat against West Ham United on Friday, marking the heaviest loss for the Welsh club since actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took ownership in early 2021. The result moved West Ham to the top of the English Championship standings, while Wrexham remained near the bottom of the division after a difficult start to the season.
West Ham controlled the match early at London Stadium, building a 2-0 halftime lead with goals from England international Jarrod Bowen and forward Joël Piroe. The hosts expanded their advantage after the break as Konstantinos Mavropanos, Valentín Castellanos, Mohamadou Kanté, and Manor Solomon all scored.
Wrexham struggled to generate offense throughout the game. Their sole scoring opportunity occurred when West Ham held a 1-0 lead, but Mavropanos cleared George Dobson’s effort off the goal line. Following the match, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson described the outcome as a “very tough night” and took responsibility for the performance. Parkinson acknowledged that defensive mistakes hindered his team after a competitive initial 25 minutes, praising West Ham as a “multimillion-pound attacking force.”
Record Attendance and Club Milestones
The match was played in front of 59,712 spectators, establishing a new attendance record for any game involving Wrexham. The crowd at the former London 2012 Olympics venue exceeded the club’s previous record of 54,096 fans, set during an FA Cup fixture against Liverpool at Anfield in January 1970.
The six-goal margin surpassed Wrexham’s prior worst loss under their current ownership, which was a 5-0 defeat to Stockport County in September 2023 during their time in fourth-tier football. Wrexham have recorded just one victory through their opening seven league games this season after narrowly missing out on the promotion playoffs in the previous campaign.
West Ham Take League Lead
For West Ham, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, Friday’s victory was their largest in any competition since September 2018. The win placed them top of the Championship table ahead of the remaining weekend matches.

Background
Wrexham were acquired by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in early 2021. Under their ownership, the club earned three consecutive promotions from non-league football to reach England’s second division, the Championship, for the first time last season.
