Xabi Alonso Begins Chelsea Tenure With 3-2 Victory Over Fulham

Chelsea secured a 3-2 victory against Fulham in their opening Premier League match of the season, giving new head coach Xabi Alonso a winning start in his first competitive fixture since taking charge at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer, who had missed out on a place in England’s World Cup squad following his injury struggles, commented on his fitness efforts after the game. “I’ve worked extra hard,” Palmer told Sky Sports, adding that he had engaged in extra preparation day in and day out to prevent further injuries.

Fulham pulled a goal back in the 54th minute when debutant Gonzalo Garcia, recently signed from Real Madrid, headed home after Sanchez could only parry a shot from Timothy Castagne. Fulham had a chance to equalize in the 78th minute, but Antonee Robinson chipped his shot wide of Sanchez, who was left stranded away from his goal line.

The match marked a competitive debut for both managers. Alonso’s victory came against his former Liverpool and Spain teammate Alvaro Arbeloa, who took charge of Fulham after previously serving as Real Madrid manager, where he briefly succeeded Alonso last season.

Chelsea were without injured midfielder Moises Caicedo and new defender Marco Palestra. Goalkeeper Sanchez started the match amid potential pressure from Mike Penders, who recently returned to Chelsea from sister club Racing Strasbourg. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez, a World Cup runner-up with Argentina currently linked with a transfer to Manchester City, was booed by home fans after coming on as a substitute midway through the second half.
