A youthful United States women’s basketball roster featuring Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese is set to compete over the next 10 days at the FIBA World Cup in Berlin. The team is pursuing the country’s 12th World Cup gold medal and its fifth consecutive title at the event.

Reflecting on their journey from youth national teams, Clark described sharing the international stage with her long-time peers as “kind of like a pinch me moment.”

Roster Adjustments and Senior Debuts

The composition of the 12-player squad altered significantly following an announcement on Monday that Team USA veterans A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum were unavailable due to health reasons. Their absence prompted the national team to call up young players Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron to complete the roster.

With six players under the age of 25, the squad matches the highest number of players in that age category on a U.S. World Cup or Olympic roster since 1994. Furthermore, seven players on the team—including 26-year-old Rhyne Howard—are making their debuts for the senior national team at a major 5-on-5 international tournament. This marks the second-highest total of major tournament debutants on a U.S. roster in 32 years.

From Youth Competitions to the Senior Stage

Several members of the roster have previously played together in USA Basketball’s junior development pipeline. Clark, Bueckers, Aliyah Boston, Howard, and Citron won gold medals at youth events, including the 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Argentina and the 2019 U19 World Cup in Thailand. Remembering an early U16 training camp, Bueckers recalled that “we were all down bad hurting at such a young age.”

Former USA Basketball women’s national team director Carol Callan, who oversaw the programs from 1996 to 2021, noted that youth development rosters historically yielded an average of only one future Olympian per team. Callan highlighted the persistence of players like Reese, who joined the senior pathway after missing out on earlier youth squad selections and making her debut at the 2023 AmeriCup, as well as Iriafen, who first trained with the national program in December.

Rising Global Competition

Despite the high proportion of younger talent, Team USA faces high expectations standard for a program that has lost only a single game in World Cup or Olympic competition since 1994. However, recent results highlight growing parity in international basketball, including the U.S. team’s narrow one-point victory over France in the gold medal game at the Paris Olympics.

Head coach Kara Lawson noted that the international field presents an increasing challenge for the program, stating that “there’s no question that the world is improving at a rapid rate.”

Background

The U.S. women’s basketball program has long dominated international competition, capturing four consecutive FIBA World Cup titles entering the Berlin tournament. The 2026 World Cup marks a generational shift for the national team, elevated by a group of young stars who have significantly increased the popularity and public visibility of women’s basketball domestically in the WNBA.
