San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos after sustaining a rib injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the receiver will be a game-time decision, though Evans expressed a strong desire to suit up if the pain remains manageable.
Player Recovery and Management
Evans missed practice sessions on Wednesday and Thursday before returning as a limited participant on Friday. Speaking to reporters for the first time since the injury, Evans emphasized his intention to play if physically possible. “It’s my job,” Evans said, stating he takes pride in competing whenever available.
To protect the area, the receiver plans to utilize modified equipment rather than traditional protective gear. Evans declined the option of wearing a flak jacket, saying it “looks kind of weak” and is typically worn by quarterbacks. He instead aims to wear a compression shirt featuring built-in padding while spending additional time warming up prior to kickoff.
Origin of the Injury
The injury occurred during the first half of San Francisco’s victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Evans explained that while running a route, he turned and felt a sudden sharp pain, describing that it “felt like somebody stabbed me in my chest.” He fell to the ground and was taken to the locker room on a cart.
Evans noted he could not pinpoint the exact moment of injury, though he recalled absorbing a heavy hit earlier from Cardinals safety Budda Baker. Evans previously played through a rib issue in November 2022 during his tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, recording five catches for 54 yards against the Seattle Seahawks. Shanahan, who sustained three broken ribs in a car crash in July, praised the receiver’s physical resilience.
Additional Roster Injuries
San Francisco enters the Denver matchup with several other players sidelined. Defensive end Nick Bosa has been ruled out with a calf injury, defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. will miss the game due to an ankle injury, and defensive lineman Mykel Williams is out with a knee issue.
Two additional defensive players remain questionable alongside Evans. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is dealing with a thigh injury, and defensive lineman Keion White is managing a hamstring issue. Both players missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday before returning in a limited capacity on Friday.
Background
In National Football League rules, teams release official injury reports ahead of weekly games. Players categorized as questionable have an uncertain chance of playing, with final active roster decisions announced shortly before kickoff.
