US Judge Lifts Trump’s White House Media Ban

A United States federal judge has ordered President Donald Trump to restore White House access for journalists representing CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. US District Judge Tim Kelly ruled on Thursday that the administration’s ban on the three news organizations was likely unconstitutional. Judge Kelly issued the order in response to a lawsuit filed by the three media organizations contesting the restrictions. President Trump announced the ban on September 18, writing on social media that the outlets “shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES.”

Following the announcement, reporters for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico were denied entry to White House grounds on Saturday, and their press credentials were confiscated. In court, Justice Department attorneys attempted to defend the exclusion on national security grounds. Judge Kelly, a Trump appointee, rejected the argument. Kelly previously ruled against the administration during Trump’s first presidential term, temporarily restoring White House credentials to a CNN reporter whose pass had been revoked.

Industry Boycott and Legal Support

The administration’s ban provoked widespread opposition across the US news industry. On Monday, five major television networks—ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox, and NBC—took the rare step of suspending their collective pool coverage of White House events, where one network films on behalf of all broadcasters.

In a joint statement explaining the protest, the five networks said that “no administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.” Additionally, the White House Correspondents’ Association and nearly 50 news organizations submitted a joint legal brief requesting that the court reverse the exclusions.

Broader Media Tensions

The court ruling follows further public friction between the president and journalists. Speaking to a CNN reporter at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Trump said, “I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me. You shouldn’t be here.”

Alongside the restrictions on traditional media, the White House launched its own streaming channel, titled “Trump TV,” on Monday evening. The administration stated the platform would broadcast official videos, major speeches, and highlights around the clock.
