White House Bars CNN From Air Force One

The White House has excluded CNN from travelling aboard Air Force One to cover US President Donald Trump’s trip to Tennessee on Saturday. The decision is the latest development in an ongoing conflict between the executive branch and major news organizations following a court order temporarily lifting a broader ban on journalists.

The restriction affects reporting coverage for the president’s planned attendance at a college football game between the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

Dispute Over Travel Schedules and Pool Seats

Discrepancies exist between reports regarding whether another outlet was assigned to the flight. According to White House guidance reported by Al Jazeera, conservative network Real America’s Voice News was selected to replace CNN on Air Force One. The seat had traditionally been reserved for a rotating member of the US network video pool, a group that does not include Real America’s Voice News. However, BBC News reported that CNN found no replacement media organization listed on the president’s tentative schedule.

The travel conflict follows an order by President Trump last week banning journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House grounds after claiming they published false accounts of his administration. The three outlets filed a lawsuit challenging the restriction as a violation of their constitutional rights to free speech and press freedom. Theodore Boutrous Jr, an attorney representing the media companies, stated during an interview on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper” on Friday that the plaintiffs view recent court decisions as extending to media pool access as well.

Court Order and Press Pool Response

Early on Thursday, US District Judge Timothy Kelly granted a temporary order striking down the White House grounds ban. In the ruling, Judge Kelly wrote that the government offered no evidence showing how the news coverage “damaged the national security,” making the administration’s legal argument unsupported. The judicial order specifically addressed White House press credentials rather than travel aboard Air Force One or network pool arrangements.

During the initial ban, the remaining four major television networks in the press pool—ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC—paused broadcasts or declined to participate in pool duties in solidarity with the excluded outlets. In response to the broadcast pause, the White House launched an independent streaming service named Trump TV ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Persistent Access Issues

Regular network coverage resumed on Friday after White House officials readmitted journalists to the grounds. However, access restrictions continued earlier in the week when White House staff denied entry to specified CNN and MS NOW reporters assigned to a state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday.

A White House communications account posted on social media platform X that media organizations do not possess unrestricted entry into every portion of the executive residence or to every official event.
