US Military Destroys Iran-Linked Tankers as Middle East Escalations Spread

The United States military announced on Saturday that it destroyed three oil tankers linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), following reported explosions near Iran’s critical fuel hub at Kharg Island. The maritime actions mark a sharp escalation as the military conflict between the United States and Iran enters its seventh month.

United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reported on social media that American forces permanently disabled the crude oil carriers M/T Downy near Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 near Jask, citing response to failed Iranian attacks. CENTCOM stated that forces also destroyed an unladen vessel, the M/T Kylo, in the Gulf of Oman after ordering its crew to abandon ship. State-linked Iranian news outlets separately reported a strike targeting an oil vessel off Kharg Island, though official Iranian coverage noted no visible smoke in the area. Neither government has issued detailed public statements beyond the military reports.

Cross-Border Escalation in Lebanon

The maritime strikes occurred alongside renewed fighting in southern Lebanon between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, despite a ceasefire signed more than two months ago. Recent clashes have centered on Ali Taher hill, a strategic point north of the Litani River overlooking the city of Nabatiyeh.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, at least five people have been killed and 24 injured in the fighting since Friday. While the United States has attempted to mediate by urging Hezbollah to relinquish control of the hill to the Lebanese military, the group has refused to vacate its positions, raising concerns that the skirmishes could expand into broader operations around Nabatiyeh.

Contradictory Statements on Gaza Displacements

In the occupied West Bank, United States Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee visited the town of Turmus Ayya on Saturday to meet with Palestinian-Americans affected by an increase in violence from Israeli settlers. Huckabee said that “crime is crime, terror is terror” and stated Israel has a responsibility to protect residents, while declining to directly critique official Israeli policies.

During his visit, Huckabee explicitly rejected reports of forced population transfers, claiming that “there is no plan of the Israelis” to move Palestinians out of Gaza against their will. His statement contradicts announcements made by Israeli government ministers earlier in the week. On Thursday, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir outlined a proposal to remove 250,000 Palestinians from Gaza in its first year and the remaining population of over two million within six years. Defense Minister Israel Katz also stated that Israel stood ready to relocate Gaza residents while awaiting discussions with American officials.
