Indonesian Ferry Sinks in Java Sea Leaving 130 Missing

An Indonesian passenger ferry carrying 243 people sank in the Java Sea on Sunday after encountering severe weather conditions during its journey between Java and Borneo. Local rescue authorities confirmed that six people died, 107 were brought to safety, and approximately 130 remain missing. The vessel, named the Virgo Transport 8, departed from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city on the island of Java, at 10:13 a.m. local time (0330 UTC) on Saturday. It was bound for Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province on Borneo island, where it was scheduled to dock around 2:00 p.m. local time (0700 UTC) on Sunday.

The ferry’s operator lost contact with the vessel early Sunday morning amid deteriorating weather. The Associated Press reported that the ship’s last known location was in the Java Sea, roughly 148 kilometers (92 miles) from the destination pier in Banjarmasin.

Search and Rescue Operations

Response teams launched a search mission after the ship’s operator alerted maritime authorities to the situation. Emergency services deployed multiple ships and a helicopter to scan the waters near the vessel’s last recorded coordinates.

I Putu Sudayana, head of the Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office, said authorities were mobilizing all available personnel and equipment due to the large number of people aboard. He noted that search teams were coordinating with maritime authorities while monitoring weather conditions across the search zone.

“We have carried out efforts to search for victims to the fullest extent,” Sudayana said. He added that initial rescue units arriving at the scene successfully recovered dozens of survivors from the water.
