Trump Dismisses Report China Gave Satellite Data to Iran

US President Donald Trump has minimized reports that Chinese organizations supplied satellite reconnaissance of a Jordanian military base to Iran prior to a deadly missile attack. The strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in July resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers. Speaking to reporters on Sunday aboard Air Force One while returning from Ireland, Trump downplayed intelligence concerns between Washington and Beijing.

Reported Intelligence Sharing

The Wall Street Journal reported that unnamed American officials alleged Chinese entities provided Iran with satellite photographs of the installation before the assault. The report indicated that officials declined to identify the specific Chinese firms involved and did not suggest that the Chinese government in Beijing directly ordered the transfer.

When questioned about the report, Trump framed surveillance activities as mutual and standard international behavior. “That’s what we do. They basically do what we do,” Trump said, adding that when claims arise regarding Chinese espionage, the United States conducts similar activities in return.

Upcoming Diplomacy and Bilateral Ties

Trump refused to say whether he intended to raise the issue during an anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi is expected to visit the White House on September 24, though Chinese officials have not formally confirmed that the meeting will take place.

Addressing bilateral relations, Trump maintained that his rapport with the Chinese leader remains solid. “I think he’s behaved reasonably well, and we behave reasonably well,” Trump remarked.

The United States previously sanctioned three Chinese satellite firms in May over allegations of working alongside Iranian defense entities. Trump has also cautioned Beijing against supplying armaments to Tehran. China serves as a key economic partner for Iran and remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil exports.
