New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown sustained a right ankle injury during the third quarter of his team debut against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday night, forcing him out of the remainder of the game. The Patriots went on to lose the contest 13-10 in Seattle.

The injury occurred during a third-down pass attempt from quarterback Drake Maye. Seahawks cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett was covering Brown closely when Pritchett’s right knee landed on Brown’s ankle with his full body weight. Brown held the back of his right leg while sitting on the turf before walking slowly to the sideline.

Medical Evaluation and Team Reaction

After spending significant time in the sideline medical tent, Brown walked to the locker room accompanied by athletic training and medical staff. Initially listed as questionable to return, New England officially ruled him out at the start of the fourth quarter. Following the loss, Brown was seen wearing a protective boot on his injured foot in the locker room.

According to reports citing unnamed sources, Brown is believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel provided no official update on the receiver’s status during his post-game news conference.

Teammates expressed optimism despite the injury. Team captain and safety Kevin Byard III noted that Brown was in “good spirits” following the game. Maye also voiced support for the receiver, saying, “I know A.J. will fight hard to get back.”

Impact on Debut and Upcoming Schedule

Before exiting the match, Brown recorded three receptions for 26 yards. His primary contribution came earlier in the contest when he worked back toward an underthrown deep ball from Maye, drawing a defensive pass interference penalty. That play set up New England’s first touchdown, a 2-yard pass from Maye to rookie tight end Eli Raridon on the subsequent snap.

The Patriots acquired Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles on June 1 in exchange for a 2028 first-round draft pick. New England now faces an extended break before its next fixture, hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 20.

Background

A.J. Brown was acquired by New England during the offseason to serve as a primary target for quarterback Drake Maye. The matchup against Seattle served as the opening game of the season for both teams, leaving the Patriots with extra recovery time before their Week 2 fixture.
