Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a dislocated left ankle during the team’s 30–27 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The fourth-quarter injury further weakens Kansas City’s receiving depth, prompting the franchise to pursue a potential reunion with free-agent wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Thornton Injured After Key Catch
Thornton sustained the injury in the fourth quarter after completing a 55-yard reception. He was tackled from behind by Raiders rookie free safety Treydan Stukes at the end of the play. Team medical staff placed the dislocated joint back into position on the field before Thornton was carted off to the locker room.
Thornton left the stadium on crutches but was able to travel back to Kansas City on the team charter. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid stated that the four-year veteran will undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation and is expected to seek a second opinion. The team considers Thornton out indefinitely, though report summaries indicate an expected recovery timeframe of 12 to 16 weeks.
Despite the severity of the injury, Thornton was reportedly in good spirits when leaving the locker room and posted on social media that he plans to return stronger. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes praised Thornton’s contribution to the win, noting, “It sucks that he hurt his ankle on that play,” while describing Thornton as “one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”
Depleted Receiver Room and Hill Pursuit
Thornton’s setback comes alongside an injury to fellow Kansas City wide receiver Rashee Rice, creating significant roster pressure at the position. In response, the Chiefs have intensified efforts to acquire free agent Tyreek Hill. The team had already expressed interest in Hill prior to Sunday’s game, and a team source confirmed following the win that “we’ve remained in contact” with Hill and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
Hill, a 10-year NFL veteran, previously played six seasons in Kansas City alongside Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, recording 62 total touchdowns. He was released by the Miami Dolphins in February to alleviate salary cap constraints after suffering a season-ending dislocated left knee and multiple torn ligaments. Hill has recently published videos showing him running routes and catching passes, with the Chiefs anticipating he could be ready to return to action in November.
Background
Tyreek Hill spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs, becoming one of the league’s most dynamic offensive targets before being traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2022. The Chiefs’ wide receiver depth has faced repeated challenges from injuries over recent seasons, making familiar veteran options attractive as the team seeks to defend its competitive standing in the AFC.
