Cross-border strikes between Ukraine and Russia killed at least seven civilians across both nations on Saturday, coming just one day after a series of heavy Russian bombardments claimed at least 20 lives in Ukraine. The recent wave of strikes marks a significant intensification of hostilities in the ongoing four-and-a-half-year conflict, with civilian casualties reaching levels not seen since the war began.

During the middle of the day on Saturday, Russian forces launched ballistic missiles aimed at the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. According to statements from the Ukrainian air force, the missiles struck the Boryspil district on the eastern periphery of the city, leaving two people dead and eight others wounded. These lunchtime strikes followed overnight Russian attacks that killed two additional civilians—one inside Kyiv and another in the southern Zaporizhzhia region near the active front lines.

Targeting Russian territory on Saturday, Ukrainian drones struck residential areas in multiple regions. In the southern Krasnodar territory, a drone attack hit a private home in the Yeysk district. Veniamin Kondratyev, the regional governor, reported that two children were killed in the strike and their parents were rushed to a hospital. Kondratyev publicly denounced the attack as a ‘vile and cynical strike’ on civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, a separate Ukrainian drone hit the central Russian region of Samara, where the local governor confirmed one person was killed.

The weekend attacks followed Friday’s lethal double-tap strike on a commercial center in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Regional officials reported that Russian drones hit a bustling shopping mall during daytime hours, causing massive fires. About 30 minutes after the initial impact, a second drone detonated while victims and rescuers were on site. President Zelensky condemned the strategy, describing the attack as ‘cynical and despicable.’ At least 16 people died, over 100 sustained injuries, and four individuals remained unaccounted for beneath the rubble on Saturday.

Rescue crews in Kryvyi Rih utilized heavy machinery to remove twisted metal and charred debris from the ruined facility on Saturday, as community members placed letters and flowers at an informal memorial nearby. Inside the damaged structure, fire-damaged supermarket inventory remained stacked beneath collapsed ceilings and blown-out windows.

Background

The latest surge in violence comes as United Nations monitors report that civilian deaths in Ukraine during 2026 have escalated to their highest rate since the initial months of the conflict. Diplomatic negotiations aimed at ending the war have hit an impasse. Although the United States previously mediated several rounds of direct negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, American diplomatic engagement has waned due to Washington’s military conflict with Iran and frustration over the lack of progress. To reignite diplomatic pressure, Ukraine and its key European partners are scheduled to hold a joint virtual meeting on Monday to discuss strategy against Russia.
