Father Testifies in Trial Over Surfers Killed in Mexico

The father of two Australian surfers murdered in Mexico gave emotional testimony on the second day of a homicide trial in Ensenada. Martin Robinson described the harrowing process of identifying the bodies of his sons, who were killed alongside an American companion during a coastal trip in April 2024. Three men are currently on trial facing murder charges linked to an attempted vehicle theft.

Court Hears Family Testimony

Martin Robinson testified about the emotional toll caused by the loss of his sons, 30-year-old Jake Robinson and 33-year-old Callum Robinson. He explained the difficulty of identifying their remains after their recovery, noting that Callum was recognized by a forearm tattoo while Jake required photographic identification. “It’s hell,” Robinson told the court, adding that losing two sons had completely disrupted his family’s life.

During his statement, Robinson expressed confusion over the violence, remarking that he could not understand how anyone could take the lives of two people with so much future ahead of them. Despite the tragedy, he stated that the family held no resentment toward those responsible.

Robbery Attempt Led to Killings

According to authorities, the three tourists were killed during an effort by attackers to steal their pickup truck while they were on a surfing expedition along Mexico’s Pacific shoreline. Investigators later discovered the burned remains of the truck near a cliff-top shaft where the bodies had been concealed. All three victims suffered gunshot wounds to the head.

The court also received evidence from a protected witness who testified on the first day of proceedings. The witness stated that they accompanied one of the accused to the location before fleeing upon hearing gunshots. The witness claimed they were subsequently threatened to keep quiet about the events.

The court proceedings cover the deaths of the Robinson brothers as well as 30-year-old American citizen Jack Carter Rhoad. Additional family testimony is expected as the trial continues, with Rhoad’s widow, Natalie, scheduled to appear before the court on Wednesday.
