Kyler Murray Sustains Concussion in Vikings Debut

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray suffered a concussion during his regular-season debut on Sunday, leaving the field in the first quarter of his team’s 39-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Backup quarterback Carson Wentz stepped in to lead Minnesota’s comeback win, throwing three touchdown passes at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Murray, who signed a one-year deal with Minnesota in March and earned the starting role during training camp, was forced out of the contest on his eleventh offensive play. After throwing an interception on his opening pass and completing three of his next four attempts for 18 yards, Murray scrambled on a third-and-six play with six minutes and 16 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

The On-Field Incident

As Murray initiated a slide near Minnesota’s 35-yard line, Green Bay defensive end Lukas Van Ness pulled Murray’s helmet while safety Javon Bullard struck him with his right shoulder. Referee Shawn Hochuli’s crew penalized Bullard for unnecessary roughness.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell stated after the match that Murray “seemed to be doing pretty well.”

Vikings players voiced concern regarding the nature of the hit. Right tackle Brian O’Neill confronted Bullard immediately following the play and later expressed regret for not reacting more strongly. Receiver Justin Jefferson described seeing the starting quarterback go down so early as difficult to watch, while running back Aaron Jones Sr. noted the disturbing nature of seeing a player posture on the field after an impact.

Wentz Leads Comeback

The Vikings trailed 19-10 at halftime after Green Bay capitalized on subsequent possessions. Wentz, who was designated as the backup quarterback the previous week, struggled initially after taking limited practice snaps with the starting unit during training camp.

Wentz adjusted as the game progressed, completing 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards without an interception. His three touchdown passes made him only the third NFL backup quarterback since 1950 to throw three touchdowns with zero interceptions in a season opener. Reflecting on his unexpected entry, Wentz said he stayed prepared by “leaving it in God’s hands.”

While Murray remains in concussion protocol, Wentz is expected to start for Minnesota in their upcoming game against the Chicago Bears. Rookie J.J. McCarthy is expected to serve as the secondary backup, with practice squad quarterback Max Brosmer as an additional option.
