Reform UK Officials Resign Following Foreign Donation Sting

Two senior officials from Britain’s hard-right Reform UK party resigned on Friday after a broadcast investigation revealed undercover footage of party figures discussing foreign funding. Policy head James Orr and party aide Dan Jukes stepped down during Reform UK’s annual conference in Birmingham, overshadowing an event intended to showcase the party’s policy platform.

Undercover Investigation Details

The secret filming, produced by the journalism group Verbatim and broadcast by Channel 4 News, followed a year-long operation in which reporters posed as wealthy American donors with British connections. Channel 4 reported that it verified the findings, which included covertly recorded meetings and a lunch with Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, whom footage showed thanking the prospective donors.

According to the report, party officials arranged for a United States company to pay over £30,000 for three opinion polls commissioned by Reform UK earlier this year. The investigation also showed party representatives discussing steps to channel a £500,000 foreign donation through a United Kingdom intermediary. Under UK election law, political parties are barred from accepting donations from foreign entities or non-eligible overseas individuals.

Police Complaints and Party Response

Following the broadcast, Britain’s ruling Labour Party and other rival political organizations reported Reform UK to police over potential breaches of electoral funding rules regarding the polling payments and the proposed donation structure.

Reform UK stated that Orr and Jukes stepped down pending the outcome of an internal party inquiry. Farage told reporters that remarks by the two former officials in the footage were “injudicious at best” and dismissed suggestions that the party had previously taken disguised foreign funds as loose talk.

Addressing delegates during his keynote speech at the conference, Farage denied any illegal conduct by the organization, describing the undercover operation as a “prolonged exercise in entrapment.” He told the audience, “The party has done nothing wrong. The party has taken no illegal money.”

Financial Inquiries and Policy Pledges

The allegations add to existing financial scrutiny surrounding the party’s leadership. Farage, 62, is already the subject of a parliamentary inquiry concerning a £5 million donation received in 2024 from cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne, an allegation of wrongdoing that Farage denies. Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice is also facing allegations concerning undeclared financial gifts.

Despite the disruption, Reform UK used the Birmingham conference to highlight its political agenda, which focuses primarily on border control and anti-immigration policy. Home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf told attendees that a future Reform government would deploy the Royal Navy to stop migrant boat crossings and deport foreign nationals residing illegally in the country.

The event also included an address by Jordan Bardella, president of France’s far-right National Rally party. Bardella and Farage announced a memorandum of understanding committing to bilateral cooperation on illegal immigration should their respective parties take power.
