Military operations and armed clashes expanded across the Middle East on Saturday as the United States military struck Iranian oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, Israeli forces launched airstrikes across southern and eastern Lebanon, and heavy combat in Yemen left dozens dead. The incidents mark a widespread escalation of regional hostilites despite active ceasefire agreements and diplomatic engagements.

US Military Disables Iranian Tankers in Gulf

The United States military stated that its forces struck and rendered unusable three Iranian crude oil carriers after an American aircraft carrier and a destroyer evaded unprovoked missile attacks launched by Iran. According to US military statements, two loaded Iranian tankers were permanently disabled, while a third, empty vessel was destroyed. No American personnel were injured in the engagement.

Iranian state-affiliated outlets, including the Tasnim news agency and Asr Iran, reported that an Iranian tanker near Kharg Island was struck by four projectiles while unloading. Local sources cited by Iranian media stated there were no casualties among the vessel’s crew, who were evacuated. Fars news agency reported several explosions in the vicinity of Kharg Island, a central hub that historically handled up to 90 percent of crude exports for Iran, the third-largest producer in OPEC. Iranian crude exports have been restricted by a US naval blockade established in mid-April.

Lebanon Reports Deaths Following Israeli Strikes

Lebanon’s health ministry reported that four people were killed and 32 others injured, including women, children, and emergency personnel, following Israeli airstrikes hit five locations late Friday. Targets included the southern regions of Tyre and Nabatieh, as well as the eastern Beqaa region. The ministry initially reported three fatalities and 23 injuries before updating the casualty count.

Specific strikes reported by Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency included a missile strike on a motorcycle in Nabatieh that killed two men, and an attack on the village of Rmadiyeh near Tyre that killed one person and injured 15 others. Additional strikes targeted areas near the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge. Israeli military officials stated the strikes were carried out in response to a attempted attack by Hezbollah, despite a current truce between the two sides. Israel claimed to have captured the ridge, though Hezbollah has not confirmed any loss of territory.

Clashes in Yemen and Diplomatic Warnings in West Bank

In southwest Yemen, fighting between Saudi-backed government forces and Iran-aligned Houthi rebels killed over 60 people within several hours. Military and medical officials reported that 26 government soldiers and 31 Houthi fighters died in the combat. Additionally, a missile strike on a passenger bus in the government-controlled city of Taiz killed six civilians and wounded seven others.

Separately, during a visit with Palestinian-Americans in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee addressed rising violence by Israeli settlers. Huckabee emphasized that local residents have “a right to live with a level of security and safety,” adding that the Israeli government maintains a direct responsibility to ensure protection for Palestinian communities.

Background

The developments occur against a backdrop of regional conflict involving Iran and its regional allies. Tensions in the Persian Gulf have escalated since the US imposed a strict blockade on Iranian crude oil exports in mid-April, aiming to restrict Tehran’s primary revenue source. Concurrently, southern Lebanon remains volatile under a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, while Yemen’s multi-year civil war continues to disrupt the Arabian Peninsula despite past diplomatic attempts at stabilization.
