One Dead and Five Injured in Shooting at Swiss Music Festival

Law enforcement authorities in Switzerland have launched a major search operation following an overnight shooting at an outdoor music festival in the northern part of the country, which left one person dead and five others injured.

The incident occurred prior to 3:00 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) on Sunday during the annual Aarauer Rave. The techno party was taking place at the Schachen race course in Aarau, a town with a population of approximately 22,300 people located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Zürich.

A 22-year-old woman died as a result of the shooting, according to police statements. Italy’s Foreign Ministry subsequently confirmed in an official statement that the deceased woman was an Italian national. Five other victims, aged between 24 and 27 years, sustained injuries during the attack. Local police reported that some of these wounded individuals suffered serious injuries.

Swiss police are currently searching for at least one gunman responsible for opening fire at the event. Speaking to reporters, police spokesman Bernhard Graser emphasized that law enforcement agencies do not yet have confirmed details about those who carried out the shooting. Graser stated, “For the moment, we have no reliable information regarding the perpetrators.” He added that authorities do not know if the attack involved a single gunman or multiple individuals, nor whether the perpetrators fled the scene on foot or in a vehicle.

Graser also explained that although certain initial indicators suggest the perpetrators may have already departed the area, emergency services have deployed a substantial police presence across the region so officers can quickly apprehend the suspects if they remain nearby.

The investigation and manhunt have expanded across international borders. According to a report from the German news agency dpa, police officers in Freiburg, located in neighboring Germany, are participating in the search efforts alongside their Swiss counterparts.

Officers at the scene requested that members of the public avoid the area surrounding the race course while the operation remains active. Police have also appealed to witnesses and attendees to share any photos or video recordings taken during the incident to help reconstruct the timeline of the attack. Swiss newspaper Blick quoted police spokeswoman Vanessa Rumpold confirming that the shots were fired inside the race course grounds hosting the techno gathering.
