One Dead and Five Injured in Shooting at Swiss Rave Event

An early-morning shooting at a music gathering in northern Switzerland left one woman dead and five other people wounded on Sunday, August 30. Emergency responders received initial alerts at around 2:30 a.m. local time in the city of Aarau, where an event called “Aarau Rave VOL. 7” was taking place at a horse racing facility in the Schachen district.

Local cantonal police reported that a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Five additional attendees—four men and one woman between 24 and 27 years old—were transported to hospitals with injuries spanning from minor to critical. Swiss law enforcement stated that all six victims were Swiss residents and withheld their names under national privacy laws. However, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni later publicly identified the deceased woman as Maria Spinelli, stating that she and two of the injured individuals were Italian citizens.

Police launched a wide-ranging operation to locate the perpetrator or perpetrators, deploying nearly the entire Aargau cantonal force alongside emergency services. Authorities in Freiburg, Germany, also assisted in the search due to the region’s proximity to the border. Police spokesperson Bernhard Graser stated that “The manhunt is continuing nonstop at full speed” as investigators scoured the surrounding area. Although law enforcement officials admitted they had not determined the location of any suspects, they noted that the public was no longer facing an active threat.

Investigators have not established a motive for the attack. Graser suggested that a terrorist motive was unlikely given that the party was ending when the gunfire broke out, noting a physical altercation was a possible explanation. Reflecting on the unusual nature of the crime, Graser stated that “In terms of its nature, this incident is certainly unique in recent years” for local authorities.

According to local reports, several attendees initially mistook the gunfire for pyrotechnics until someone ordered the crowd to get down. Firefighters subsequently established a large perimeter around the racecourse, while officers transported remaining witnesses to a nearby gymnasium for questioning. Authorities have asked anyone with photos or video footage of the event to contact investigators. The venue’s operator, the Aargau Racing Club, expressed sympathy for victims and commended first responders, while performing artist DJ Tekibo wrote online that “what happened at Aarauer rave is absolutely heartbreaking.”
