Volvo’s Cars Will Warn One Another About Hazards on the Road

Volvo is taking connected-car safety a step further with a new software update that allows its vehicles to share information about hazards on the road and warn other drivers before they reach the danger.

The expanded Connected Safety system is being introduced for the Volvo EX60, EX90 and ES90 in Europe, the United States and Canada. Availability can vary depending on the vehicle and market.

The idea is straightforward: when one connected Volvo detects a potentially dangerous situation, information about the hazard can be transmitted through Volvo’s connected infrastructure and made available to other vehicles approaching the same location.

Four New Types of Road Hazard Alerts

The latest update adds four major safety alerts.

Large Animal Alert can warn drivers when a large animal is detected on or near the road ahead. This could be particularly useful on roads where animals such as deer or other large wildlife can suddenly enter traffic.

Vulnerable Road User Alert is designed to warn about pedestrians and cyclists detected on or near highways.

Roadwork Alert can provide an advance warning when road construction is detected farther along the driver’s route.

The fourth feature, Accident Ahead Alert, can notify approaching drivers about crashes farther ahead. Volvo says accident information can come from connected Volvo vehicles as well as traffic-management centers.

How Volvo’s Connected Safety Works

The system relies on connected vehicles sharing information rather than requiring every driver to personally report a hazard.

For example, if one Volvo encounters a dangerous situation, the relevant information can be sent to Volvo’s servers. Other compatible Volvo vehicles approaching the location can then receive a warning through their in-car systems.

Volvo says its Connected Safety technology has been operating since 2016, initially providing warnings related to hazards such as slippery roads and activated hazard lights. The company has now expanded the system to cover a broader range of real-world road dangers.

More Than One Million Cars Are Connected

The technology is becoming increasingly significant as Volvo’s connected vehicle fleet grows.

More than one million Volvo vehicles now support Connected Safety, according to current reporting. Volvo also participates in the wider European Data for Road Safety ecosystem, allowing relevant road-safety information to reach traffic authorities and, in some circumstances, vehicles from other manufacturers.

That means the long-term goal could extend beyond a network made up exclusively of Volvo vehicles.

The System Still Has Limitations

Despite the technology’s potential, drivers should not treat Connected Safety as a replacement for normal attention.

The vehicle needs an active internet connection, Connected Safety must be enabled, and the road must be supported by Volvo’s mapping infrastructure. If connectivity is poor or unavailable, the feature may not work until the connection is restored.

Volvo also explicitly warns that connected safety alerts should supplement safe driving rather than replace it. Drivers are still responsible for watching the road and responding appropriately to changing conditions.

A Step Toward Cooperative Driving

The bigger significance of Volvo’s update is the idea that cars can increasingly act as sensors for one another.

A driver may not yet be able to see a crash, cyclist, roadwork zone or animal around a bend, but another connected vehicle may already have detected it. Sharing that information can potentially give approaching drivers additional time to slow down or change their driving behavior.

As more vehicles become connected, these systems could create a continuously updated digital picture of road conditions.

Volvo’s latest Connected Safety features therefore represent more than another driver-assistance feature. They point toward a future in which vehicles communicate with each other—and potentially with road authorities—to make roads safer before hazards become visible to every driver.
