Andrew Hastie Threatens Legal Fight Against One Nation

Australian Liberal MP Andrew Hastie has warned the right-wing One Nation party of a costly fight, including potential legal action, following accusations that he betrayed his country. The clash stems from Hastie’s testimony in a legal proceeding involving a decorated former soldier facing war crimes charges.

Backlash Over War Crimes Testimony

In an email sent to supporters on Tuesday, Hastie defended his military service as a former Special Air Service captain who completed two combat deployments to Afghanistan. He explained that he obeyed a court subpoena to give sworn testimony in a failed defamation case brought by Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith against Nine newspapers. Roberts-Smith has since been charged with war crimes related to his military service.

Hastie stated he had faced intense abuse, including being called a traitor and a rat, for complying with the court order. Directing his comments at One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and party director James Ashby, Hastie said he was calling time on “cowards who have never served a day in the Australian Defence Force” attacking his integrity. He warned that any effort to target him politically or legally would prove expensive in time, money, and political capital.

Electoral Pressure and Security Concerns

One Nation and its billionaire financial supporter, Gina Rinehart, contend that Roberts-Smith is being unfairly prosecuted. The party has signalled an intent to mount a strong campaign against Hastie in his Western Australian electorate of Canning at the next federal election, scheduled for 2028. One Nation recently won a state byelection in Secret Harbour, a seat that falls within the boundaries of Hastie’s federal district.

The political dispute follows reported threats against Hastie and his family. The federal government increased security measures around his home and electoral office earlier this year in response to ongoing harassment.

Tensions in Opposition Politics

The dispute coincides with broader criticism of One Nation by the Liberal Party leadership. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor informed Liberal lawmakers on Tuesday that One Nation was “unfit to govern the country.” Taylor referenced recent public allegations made by a former partner against One Nation’s Victorian leader, Warren Pickering, regarding past heavy drug use. Pickering denied the allegations, and Hanson confirmed she remains satisfied with his leadership.

Hastie is regarded as a key figure within the Liberal Party and a potential contender for party leadership, having decided against challenging Taylor earlier this year. An opposition frontbench reshuffle is anticipated following shadow home affairs minister Jonno Duniam’s announcement that he will retire from parliament in the coming months.
