A single computer simulation of the 2026 National Football League season generated by ESPN’s Football Power Index has projected a turbulent campaign marked by second-half collapses and unexpected postseason advancements. Simulation number 9,187 presents one potential trajectory out of thousands run by the predictive model, highlighting how midseason slumps and divisional tiebreakers could reshape the playoff picture.
Preseason Contenders Struggle
Several franchises anticipated to compete for postseason berths failed to reach the playoffs in the model’s run. The Chicago Bears finished with a 6β11 record after starting 3β6 through Week 10, affected by accuracy struggles from quarterback Caleb Williams and reduced rushing efficiency in head coach Ben Johnson’s second year.
The Houston Texans experienced a late-season collapse after a 6β3 start left them closely behind the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC South. Slumping performances from quarterback C.J. Stroud and a decline in defensive output resulted in an eight-game losing streak to finish 6β11. Both Chicago and Houston ended the simulated season in position for top-10 selections in the 2027 draft.
In other divisions, the Denver Broncos regressed to a 7β10 finish, while the Pittsburgh Steelers recorded an 8β9 record under first-year head coach Mike McCarthy as quarterback Aaron Rodgers delivered below-average results.
NFC East Division Scramble
The NFC East came down to the final weeks after the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants entered Week 17 tied at 7β8. Philadelphia struggled early while integrating new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, and New York was limited while receiver Malik Nabers worked back from injury.
Dallas secured the division title on tiebreakers by defeating the Washington Commanders in Week 18 to finish 9β8. Philadelphia also reached 9β8 by defeating New York but missed the postseason. As the fourth seed, Dallas defeated the fifth-seeded Seattle Seahawks 31β19 in the wild-card round behind two touchdown passes from Dak Prescott to CeeDee Lamb, before losing 27β20 to the Detroit Lions in the divisional round.
AFC Postseason Surprises
The Kansas City Chiefs regained control of the AFC West with a 12β5 record to earn the conference’s second seed, supported by Patrick Mahomes returning to top-five QBR form and receiver Rashee Rice completing a full season. However, the fifth-seeded Los Angeles Chargers, who finished 10β7, upset Kansas City 27β24 at Arrowhead Stadium in the divisional round.
The New England Patriots started 6β3 before dropping five late-season games to finish 9β8, losing wild-card tiebreakers to the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals. In the AFC South, Jacksonville clinched the title at 10β7 following a 7β2 start under quarterback Trevor Lawrence. After resting starters and losing to Indianapolis in Week 18, Jacksonville faced the Colts again in the wild-card round and was eliminated.

Background
ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) uses automated computer models to simulate the upcoming American football season thousands of times, evaluating team rosters, schedules, and past performance metrics. Individual simulation runs isolate specific potential pathways and single outcomes rather than representing the overall statistical averages or consensus forecasts of analysts.
