Mistrial Declared in Trial of Massachusetts Mother Accused of Killing Her Three Children

A judge in Massachusetts declared a mistrial on Friday in the case of Lindsay Clancy, a 36-year-old nurse charged with murdering her three young children, after jurors deadlocked following 40 hours of deliberation. The nearly seven-week trial generated widespread public attention and intense debate over postpartum mental health and criminal accountability.

Jury deadlocks after weeks of testimony

The trial took place at a courthouse in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where jurors heard testimony from dozens of witnesses before failing to reach a unanimous verdict. Clancy faces murder charges in the deaths of her five-year-old daughter Cora, three-year-old son Dawson, and eight-month-old son Callan.

Clancy’s mother, sister, and former husband, Patrick Clancy, all testified in court regarding her worsening mental condition leading up to the deaths. Online commentators targeted Patrick Clancy with unfounded accusations during the trial, despite Clancy never denying that she carried out the killings.

The case attracted crowds outside the Plymouth courthouse, where supporters gathered wearing pink. Public reaction across the United States remained divided, with some observers viewing Clancy as a victim failed by healthcare providers, while others argued that medical struggles do not excuse violent crime.
