Prince William will represent King Charles III at the state funeral of King Harald V of Norway in Oslo next week, Buckingham Palace has announced. The Prince of Wales will be joined by his aunt, the Princess Royal, for the service scheduled for 9 September at Oslo Cathedral.

King Harald died on 28 August at the age of 89 after leading the Norwegian monarchy for 35 years. His death has prompted widespread public mourning in Norway, where he was widely viewed as an inclusive sovereign who modernised the institution.

Royal Precedent and Official Attendees

Under British royal protocol, reigning sovereigns generally do not attend the funerals of foreign heads of state, placing the duty on the heir to the throne. Prince William previously served in a similar role in April last year when he represented King Charles at the funeral of Pope Francis in Vatican City.

Princess Anne is attending the service in a private and personal capacity. She serves as godmother to Norway’s new sovereign, King Haakon VIII, who succeeds his father alongside Queen Mette-Marit. King Harald’s widow, Sonja, is now Norway’s queen mother.

Tributes and Family Ties

Following the death of King Harald, King Charles issued a tribute referring to the late Norwegian monarch as his “dear cousin” and a “much-loved kinsman and friend.” In his message, Charles praised Harald’s “unwavering dedication” alongside his “kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty.”

The British and Norwegian royal families maintain longstanding familial links. King Harald and the late Queen Elizabeth II were second cousins, both being great-grandchildren of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

Past Diplomatic Visits

Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, previously conducted an official diplomatic tour of Norway in 2018. During that visit, King Harald and Queen Sonja hosted the British royals at the Royal Palace in Oslo, where the late monarch publicly highlighted their close family ties.

Background

The royal houses of Britain and Norway have maintained close diplomatic and personal relationships since Norway re-established an independent monarchy in 1905. Queen Maud of Norway, wife of King Haakon VII, was born a British princess as the daughter of King Edward VII, establishing a direct genealogical link between the two houses that persists today.
