Zelenskyy Offers to Meet Putin at Miami G20 Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed a willingness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at the upcoming Group of 20 summit scheduled for December in Miami. Speaking in an interview with Deutsche Welle, Zelenskyy stated that he would travel to Florida if Putin attends, emphasizing that direct dialogue is needed to work toward ending the war. The two leaders have not met in person since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Proposed Summit and Peace Initiatives

Addressing the potential meeting, Zelenskyy stressed that achieving practical outcomes was more critical than rhetoric, stating, “Results matter. That’s it.” The Kremlin has not announced whether Putin will travel to the United States for the summit. The Russian president has not attended a G20 leaders’ gathering in person since 2019, though Washington invited Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov to a G20 meeting in North Carolina last month, drawing criticism from European officials.

Zelenskyy also confirmed recent discussions in Kyiv with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. He proposed an initial focus on securing a ceasefire on energy infrastructure and grain shipments as a foundational step toward broader peace negotiations. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine holds a firm position for negotiations, estimating that Russian forces are suffering over 30,000 casualties per month for minor battlefield advances. In the Black Sea, reciprocal targeting and Russian port blockades near Odesa contributed to a 76% year-on-year decline in Ukrainian grain exports in August.

Air Defense Needs and System Development

With winter approaching, Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine is struggling to defend against Russian jet-propelled drones and ballistic missiles. He reported that Russia currently manufactures about 140 ballistic missiles every month, which under NATO operational guidelines would require 280 interceptor missiles to defend against.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine aims to acquire 100 to 120 Patriot defense missiles per month during the cold season, though securing even 100 remains difficult due to limited international production. Germany recently announced plans to supply Patriot missiles from its national inventory, though it did not specify the exact quantity. To address long-term defense requirements, Ukraine has partnered with European firms to construct a domestic anti-missile system named Freya, with initial testing projected to begin by late December.

Strategic Agreements with Canada

Prior to discussing defense needs, Zelenskyy met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to finalize key bilateral agreements. The leaders signed a 100-year partnership declaration covering defense, finance, energy, humanitarian assistance, culture, and veteran affairs. Additionally, they signed an agreement to collaborate on military drone manufacturing involving multiple Ukrainian companies.
