New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has rejected demands to sit out the upcoming 25th anniversary commemoration of the September 11 attacks, stating that he will attend the ceremony to support grieving families.

The controversy arose after prominent figures, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, called for Mamdani—the city’s first Muslim mayor—not to participate in the official memorial service.

Political Tension Over Commemoration

Giuliani, who was mayor of New York City on the morning of the 2001 attacks, is among several voices calling for Mamdani to stay away from the anniversary gathering. The debate has brought political friction into what is traditionally a solemn civic ceremony.

Addressing the calls for his absence, Mamdani confirmed his plan to attend the anniversary event, saying his focus will remain on the families who lost loved ones on that day.

Impact on First Responders’ Families

The political dispute has drawn attention from relatives of victims, including Muslim American first responders who perished in the attacks. Among those killed was Salman Hamdani, a Muslim American New York police cadet who lost his life in the World Trade Center’s North Tower.

His brother, Zeshan Hamdani, has spoken publicly about the anniversary and the surrounding political debate, highlighting the sacrifices made by Muslim first responders during the tragedy.

Background

The September 11, 2001 attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people, including hundreds of emergency first responders in New York City. Annual memorial services held at the World Trade Center site regularly bring together city leaders, surviving family members, and former officials to honor those who died.
