Russian Strike on Ukrainian Shopping Mall Kills Five

A Russian drone strike on a shopping centre in the Ukrainian city of Pavlohrad killed five people and wounded 67 others on Thursday, according to Ukrainian officials. The daylight attack struck a busy commercial district in the central logistics hub, marking the latest in a series of strikes targeting commercial infrastructure across the country.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi stated that the drone hit while nearby streets were filled with people, setting vehicles and shops on fire. Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed that eight children were among those injured. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, while Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the strike a “tactic of coercion” designed to exhaust Ukrainians.

Widespread Damage Across Ukrainian Cities

The strike on Pavlohrad follows several recent attacks on commercial venues in Ukraine. On Wednesday, Ukrainian authorities reported that a Russian drone hit a shopping mall in Sumy, killing two people and wounding 20. Additional aerial bombing in Sumy on Thursday injured eight people, including three children. On Monday, an air strike severely damaged a shopping mall in Zaporizhzhia, though no casualties were reported because the building was closed.

Pavlohrad, located near Dnipro, functions as a transport and supply hub and has experienced previous strikes, including an attack on warehouses last month that killed two people. Last month, a Russian drone strike on a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih resulted in at least 16 deaths and 130 injuries.

Russian Reports of Cross-Border and Occupied Area Strikes

Russian officials also reported multiple Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory and Russian-controlled regions. Russian authorities said a Ukrainian seaborne drone attack targeted the shoreline of the resort city of Sochi overnight on Wednesday, injuring 28 people, including two children.

In Russia’s Belgorod region, local officials reported that a Ukrainian drone strike on the town of Novy Oskol on Thursday killed one person and wounded six others. In Russian-controlled areas of Zaporizhzhia, separate Ukrainian attacks on a car and a commercial truck killed a 15-year-old girl and a man, while injuring three other people. Russian state reports also noted recent Ukrainian drone strikes hitting shopping venues in occupied Mariupol and Donetsk.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than four and a half years ago. Recent diplomatic efforts by envoys sent by US President Donald Trump involved meetings in Moscow and Kyiv, but the discussions yielded few concrete results due to persistent structural differences between the two sides.
