Man Arrested Over Mississippi Homicide of Tasia Fortune

Authorities in Mississippi have arrested a suspect following the death of Tasia Fortune, a Black woman whose body was found hanging from a tree in Jackson. The medical examiner confirmed the death was a homicide, leading police to initiate murder charges in a case that has alarmed the local community and drawn attention from national lawmakers.

Investigation and Arrest

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced on Friday that 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff had been taken into custody in connection with Fortune’s death. Brackney stated that Ratliff, who is also Black, shared an association with Fortune, though law enforcement declined to elaborate on their relationship.

Fortune’s body was discovered in August on the lot of an abandoned property in Jackson. However, police only publicly announced they were investigating her death as a potential homicide earlier in September. Brackney indicated that investigators had interviewed 15 people during the inquiry and that additional arrests remain pending. Addressing the status of the investigation, Brackney stated, “This case remains active.”

Family Response and Communication Dispute

The arrest followed criticism from Fortune’s family regarding official communication. Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, stated that she made repeated attempts to reach the Jackson Police Department over a two-week period without receiving a response. A letter written by Spivey concerning communication delays was read during a city council meeting on Tuesday, shortly before police publicly declared the homicide investigation.

Chief Brackney addressed the family’s statements during Friday’s news conference, saying police had maintained contact with Fortune’s mother, stepfather, and biological father throughout the case. Spivey later expressed a degree of peace following news of the arrest, telling reporters she felt “a little sigh of relief” when notified by officers.

National Reaction and Congressional Action

The circumstances surrounding Fortune’s death have caused fear in Jackson, a majority-Black city, against the backdrop of Mississippi’s history of racial violence. A member of the United States Congress described the incident as part of a pattern of potential modern-day lynchings.

Following reports of similar incidents, more than 50 members of Congress sent a letter to the FBI and the Department of Justice requesting an independent federal investigation into deaths of Black Americans found hanging. Congressional representatives noted that at least 10 such deaths were reported in the United States during 2026, alongside more than 70 documented lynchings between 2000 and 2025.
